Where better to collect a breath of fresh air than on one of the several trails around historic Leesburg, VA? With so many hiking trails winding their way through beautiful Loudoun County, these five paths are a great place to start your Summer adventures. 1. Ball's Bluff Regional Park Loop The basic loop trail of Ball's Bluff Battlefield Regional Park is 2.1 miles long, but with seven other trails interconnecting their way through the park, it is easy to extend or shorten the hike to meet your hiking capabilities. The hike itself is a well-trafficked trail popular among families and dog walkers, featuring a beautiful historical walk through the Civil War battlefield on the shores of the Potomac River. Informational signs can be found along the trail to guide hikers through the history of the battle. 2. Red Rock Wilderness Regional Park Trail A little further south along the Potomac River is the Red Rock Wilderness Regional Park Trail. This 1.2-mile trail takes you through the woods and along the river to a viewpoint that offers beautiful panoramas of the Potomac River. Along the way, the trail features the ruins of a historic 19th-century farmhouse, as well as an array of native plants and wildlife. 3. Morven Park's Ridge Top Trail With its 1.24-mile path, The Ridge Top Trail offers a little more challenging of a hike. The hike begins at the historic Davis Mansion and coach house and features a 200-foot steady climb through the park's grounds. The path takes you along vernal pools with an abundance of wildlife before arriving at the peak. With a total elevation of 640 feet, this part of the trail is the highest point within the entire 1,000-acres of Morven Park and offers beautiful views of the surrounding region. 4. Elizabeth Mills Riverside Park Trail A part of the longer 19.5-mile Potomac Heritage Trail, this 6-mile stretch through Elizabeth Mills Riverside Park features a relaxing walk along the river before cutting inland to follow the Goose Creek Canal. While this trail features some historic buildings similar to those found on other trails, the park's highlight is the natural beauty of the riverside and the calming sounds of the flowing creek. 5. C&O Canal Trail: Whites Ferry to Edwards Ferry Hopping over to the other side of the river, we have the C&O Canal Trail. This 10-mile trail between Whites Ferry and Edwards Ferry offers the natural and historical experience of our previous trails but sees far less traffic. With fewer people to share the trail with, hikers can easily lose themselves in the history of the ferry sites and the region's natural beauty.
